Re: Changes to FLSA and Impacts on Research Finances and Operations

The University of Oregon is required to comply with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The federal Department of Labor (DOL) has announced very substantial changes to FLSA effective December 1, 2016. The changes will affect the FLSA employment classification and/or associated costs for many research personnel, as some employees’ status will change from exempt to nonexempt. This document is an introduction to the changes with an emphasis on research appointmen and grant budgeting. Additional communications and guidance can be expected throughout the summer and early fall from VPRI and from central Human Resources.
