Research Resilience Committee  

The Research Resilience Committee, led by the Office of the Provost in partnership with the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, seeks to develop and deploy a multipronged strategy to enable the University of Oregon to maintain continuity in our research enterprise, protect and support our high-impact programs and at-risk community members, and achieve our strategic vision for Oregon Rising. 

Such an effort will involve maximizing efficiencies in business operations, facilitating strategic investment in areas of research excellence that are the most vulnerable and/or unique to the UO, effectively advocating for federal funding for research, and engaging our broad base of partners committed to maintaining the UO’s leading areas of scholarship, innovation, and discovery. 

 

This committee has identified the following shared values to inform and guide our efforts.

Our strategies and approach will employ the following guiding principles: 

 

People First 
Our greatest asset is our people. We will prioritize the well-being, expertise, and contributions of our faculty, staff, and students, and prioritize staffing continuity wherever feasible. 
Respect for Research Timing 
Timing is critical in research. We will prioritize support for those at key academic or professional transitions (e.g., faculty nearing promotion and tenure decisions, graduate students completing research for a dissertation, postdoctoral scholars preparing to enter the job markets) and safeguard time-sensitive research investments. 
Collaborative Problem-Solving 
We will be creative and collaborative in our solutions, identifying opportunities to support our people and programs in ways that we have not perhaps considered before (e.g., across labs, units, institutes, colleges). 
Conservative, Strategic, and Adaptive Planning 
We will be conservative in our approach and nimble in implementing (and pivoting) strategy given the rapidly changing nature of federal funding conditions and policies. We will be clear and honest about hard decisions we need to make as an institution.  

 

Protecting Research Infrastructure and Investments
We will protect the research infrastructure and investments that define us as an R1 and AAU member institution and advance our Oregon Rising strategic vision. 
Redefining Metrics for Impact 
We will continue to pursue research excellence in our institutional culture and outcomes. As traditional metrics like expenditures fluctuate, we will develop and adopt new measures aligned with our institutional values. 
Data-Informed Decisions
We will ground our strategies in data and draw on the expertise of the deans of our schools and colleges and directors of our centers and institutes who best understand the needs of their academic units and research communities. 
Commitment to Equity and Impact 
We must advocate for and develop creative solutions to protect programming and activities that support vulnerable and at-risk communities (including the UO and the communities our researchers serve).
