Research Centers and Institutes

The University of Oregon has a long history of advancement and innovation through interdisciplinary research, education, and training. Our highly collaborative culture is supported by our research centers and institutes overseen by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation. Within our network of centers and institutes, researchers, students, and supporting staff work across disciplines to expand the boundaries of knowledge and develop innovative solutions to global challenges.

 

OVPRI Centers and Institutes

Center for the Study of Women in Society (CSWS)

This multidisciplinary research center generates, supports, and disseminates research on gender and on all aspects of women's lives. A member of the National Council for Research on Women, the center is one of 95 women's research and policy centers in the United States.

Committee on the Advancement of Women Chemists (COACh)

COACh is a grass-roots organization dedicated to increasing the number and career success of women scientists and engineers. It offers networking and mentoring opportunities and advises institutions, government organizations, and departments on creating equal professional opportunities for discovery.

Institute for Fundamental Science (IFS)

IFS supports research to understand and extend the fundamental laws of nature, bringing together UO research in high-energy particle physics, astrophysics, and astronomy, along with other foundational topics.

 

Institute for Resilient Organizations, Communities, and Environments (IROCE)

IROCE advances applied research, innovation, and partnerships to enhance resilience in organizations, communities, and the environment by managing risks, understanding adaptive capacities, and fostering innovation.

Institute of Ecology and Evolution (IE²)

IE2, established in 2002 (formerly the Center for Ecology and Evolutionary Biology), promotes and facilitates research and graduate education in ecology and evolutionary biology.  The institute encourages scientific interactions among its members and between members and the wider academic community.

Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB)

IMB fosters interdisciplinary research and training in molecular, structural, cellular, and developmental biology by bringing scientists from the Departments of Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, and Physics into a common physical and intellectual space. The institute offers graduate and postdoctoral training.

 

Institute of Neuroscience (ION)

ION is an interdisciplinary research group of scientists from the departments of Biology, Psychology, and Human Physiology. Our laboratories offer graduate and postdoctoral training in the neurosciences with projects that address the development of the nervous system to human cognitive processes.

Materials Science Institute (MSI)

MSI studies material structure and properties, educates, provide professional development, and serves Oregon. Since 1985 MSI has more than quadrupled the size of its research program, increased Federal funding in materials over ten-fold, developed five new graduate programs in materials, and contributed to the state's prosperity through collaboration with more than 25 Oregon companies.

Oregon Advanced Computing Institute for Science and Society (OACISS)

The mission of OACISS is to lead HPC research at the University of Oregon, promoting excellence in computational and data science, supporting HPC education, fostering new HPC-driven projects, and increasing UO's visibility in advanced computing.

 

Oregon Center for Optical, Molecular and Quantum Science (OMQ)

OMQ supports research and education in optics, spectroscopy, quantum science, and atomic/molecular processes. It provides administrative support, fosters collaboration, and engages students at all levels in research, promoting a dynamic environment for scientific advancement and application.

Oregon Humanities Center (OHC)

OHC is the primary interdisciplinary umbrella organization and research institute for the humanities at the UO. It seeks to promote and strengthen the humanities both on campus and in the broader community by supporting faculty research and teaching, by fostering collaboration among the disciplines, and by sponsoring a wide variety of public programs.

Prevention Science Institute (PSI)

PSI is a multidisciplinary research institute dedicated to improving the lives of children, families, and adults. Our faculty research human development to help prevent behavioral health issues and implement effective interventions in communities. 

 

Other UO Centers and Institutes

In addition to the research centers and institutes supported through the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, the University of Oregon has many other centers, institutes, and research-related groups.
