Funding for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Research and Higher Ed

Both federal agencies and private funders support efforts to broaden participation and enhance diversity among faculty, researchers, and students in higher education. In addition, many opportunities exist to conduct new fundamental and applied research on topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Broad Categories of Funding

  • Fellowships and Career Development for minoritized faculty and students (e.g., Sloan Foundation's Minority PhD Program, or NIH's Mentored Career Development Award to Promote Faculty Diversity in Biomedical Research)
  • Research on DEI-related topics (e.g., NIH's Examining Diversity, Recruitment, and Retention in Aging Research, or Research to Understand and Inform Interventions that Promote the Research Careers of Individuals in the Biomedical Sciences)
  • Institution-level program grants aimed to increase student and faculty inclusion, success, and retention (e.g., Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Driving Change, or NIH's Short-term Research Education Program to Increase Diversity in Health-Related Research).
